UW-Eau Claire GEEKcon Convention Preview on Spectrum West November 30, 2017
A preview of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire GEEKcon will presented Thursday, November 30, 2017 on Spectrum West, which airs on Wisconsin Public Radio’s Ideas Network at 10 a.m. on 88.3 WHWC-FM/ Menomonie-Eau Claire and 88.7 WRFW-FM/ River Falls. The program will also highlight a program bringing artists to an Eau Claire elementary school, a dinner theater production in Hudson, and an Eau Claire organization working to improve marriage communication.
The first UW-Eau Claire GEEKcon is coming to the Davies Center on Saturday, December 9. The convention brings together UW-Eau Claire students, faculty, staff and community members to showcase their passions and explore new ones. Rob Mattison from UW-Eau Claire Learning and Technology Services will discuss the event with host Al Ross. GEEKcon will feature merchandise, panel discussions with comic book creators and game creators, cosplay, Pokémon, monster models, knitting, podcasting and much more.
Sarah French, executive director of the Eau Claire Public Schools Foundation, joins the show to talk about the Artist in the Classroom program. The program, supported by an endowment fund through the foundation, brings artists to local schools for one semester to share their experiences with students and faculty. Artists Kris Gausman and Erin Phelps-Stark will be first artists to participate in the program in Eau Claire and will begin their partnership at Flynn Elementary School in February, 2018.
Correspondent Jim Oliver will share a conversation with Jim Zimmerman, co-director of the holiday dinner production, Chasing Christmas. The show will take place Fridays and Saturdays, December 1-January 6 at 6:00 p.m. at the St. Croix Off Broadway Dinner Theatre located in the Hudson House Grand Hotel.
Matt and Suzie Kendziera join Ross in the studio to share how they work to help others keep their relationships healthy and thriving. Their organization In It Together holds events throughout Wisconsin and Minnesota to help coach couples on marriage. In It Together will be having a Down Home Christmas Marriage Night at the Schultz Barns in Eleva on Saturday, December 2 at 6:00 p.m.
Spectrum West is a weekly program exploring the music, arts, and humanities in western Wisconsin. The show includes in-depth behind-the-scenes interviews and stories about area writers, musicians, theater, visual arts, and much more.
